The Venue
Buchanan Castle is located on the site of the ancient Buchanan Auld House, home of the Buchanan family that had held lands on Loch Lomondside since the 13th century. The local Graham family, headed by the Dukes of Montrose, bought the estate in the 1682 and invested heavily in it. The Auldhouse burned down in 1852 and the present venue incorporates a number of the surviving walls as well as the atmospheric courtyard.
Among other things, the Montroses were much involved in the breeding and training of racehorses and kept a large establishment at Newmarket, as they did at Buchanan Castle. The nearby Stables were built by the 3rdDuke (1755-1836) when he was Master of the King’s Horse.
And the ground on which the nearby golf course is laid out was used as a racetrack, and for training gallops. The family’s greatest racing success was the 1878 Derby winner, Sefton, ridden by Harry Constable. A large oil painting of the horse, jockey and attendants which hangs above the main fireplace at the venue.
The dining room displays the portraits of the Montrose family going back eight generations while other portraits are on display in the lounge area.
The present Marquis of Graham, son of the Duke, held his 21st birthday party at Buchanan Castle and the family take a very active role in the day-to-day management of the estate, including the venue.
